  18. <p>     American Psycho is just a little misogynistic. O.K., it's
  19. very misogynistic. All right, all right, there's no way we can
  20. publish this! Not exactly a rave reaction to the new novel by
  21. Bret Easton Ellis, 26, author of the best-selling Less Than
  22. Zero (1985). The book was due out in January, but no longer.
  23. Bowing to a backlash from the media and its own employees,
  24. Simon & Schuster last week canceled American Psycho, deeming
  25. it "not a book [we are] willing to publish." The book's main
  26. character spends much of his time slashing through women with
  27. techniques that would make even Freddy Krueger shudder. Ellis
  28. expressed shock at the decision, but at week's end Vintage
  29. Books decided to publish the novel in paperback. Even so, Ellis
  30. will keep his S&S advance, a reported $300,000.
